To found a firm of Chartered Professional Accountants that was focused on the needs of Ottawa’s entrepreneurial private business owners – that was the objective that Ian Hendry and I had in mind when we founded Hendry Warren LLP. We were both income tax specialists and had worked many years with large national public accounting firms. But our hearts and interest lay with private business owners.
We too were entrepreneurs and felt a kindred spirit with our clients. We understood them. A successful business would enhance the owner’s ability to achieve their personal goals. Understanding the owner’s goals, family and challenges with a healthy measure of empathy was critical. Do our best to further our client’s goals. Distinguish ourselves through effort and expertise. Be a Firm with a soul and personality. These were our Founding Principles.
We set lofty goals and high standards which in many instances we achieved and surpassed. Credit for this rests in great measure with our staff, many of whom remain members of the Firm and have become partners, who bought into our philosophy and worked diligently to maintain those high standards.
Our growth has allowed us to expand the Firm’s service offerings into many directions, such as business valuations and not-for-profit entities to name two. Ian and I have passed the mantle of leadership to our next generation of partners and look on proudly as they navigate the Firm’s future.
From a professional perspective, I serviced a large client portfolio of corporate accounting clients. I also applied my expertise in taxation to address their issues which may have ranged from the purchase or sale of their business to tax effective remuneration strategies and estate planning. Finding a solution for my clients was the most satisfying part of my career.
I was born in Ottawa and have a great affection for the city and its inhabitants. I graduated from the University of Ottawa in 1984, obtained my CA designation in 1987 and became a TEP in 2000. I have a great respect for education which perhaps was sparked by my mother who was a primary school teacher. To ensure that my tax skills remained sharp, I taught for more than 20 years for CPA Canada and CPA Ontario.
After family, sports and cars are my two other passions. There is nothing like driving to the golf course on a warm sunny day with the top down. It can even make a bad round enjoyable!
In December 2018, I was made a Fellow of CPA Ontario along with my good friend and co-founder Ian Hendry. It was a very proud moment in my career as my peers recognized our long service to our profession. One that I will not soon forget.
